Technical Textile Testing for International Buyers: What Performance Fabrics From Pakistan Need to Prove
A moisture-wicking claim is either backed by an OMMC test result or it isn't. Here is what to require from Pakistani technical fabric suppliers.

Pakistan's position in the performance fabric supply chain is stronger than most international buyers realize. Several Pakistani mills have invested in the production infrastructure, yarn technology, and finishing chemistry needed to produce moisture-wicking sportswear, UV- protective outdoor fabrics, antimicrobial workwear, and wind-resistant shell fabrics. These are real capabilities serving genuine market needs.
The challenge is that performance claims on textiles, more than any other category, require specific test evidence. A garment marketed as moisture-wicking either moves moisture from the skin surface to the fabric's outer face at a measurable rate, or it doesn't. A fabric marketed as UPF 50+ either blocks 98% of UV radiation in standardized testing, or it doesn't. The claim and the performance measurement are inseparable.
International buyers sourcing technical fabrics from Pakistan need to understand what tests to require, what the results mean, and how to specify durability requirements that reflect actual consumer use.
Moisture management: what AATCC 195 measures and what good looks like
AATCC Test Method 195 (Liquid Moisture Management Properties of Textile Fabrics) is the industry standard for quantifying a fabric's ability to move liquid moisture from the skin-contact surface to the outer face. The test uses a moisture management tester (MMT), an instrument that applies a controlled volume of artificial perspiration to the fabric surface and measures how quickly moisture spreads, absorbs, and transfers.
The MMT measures several metrics simultaneously. Wetting time is how long it takes the inner surface to become wet after perspiration is applied. Absorption rate measures how quickly the inner surface absorbs liquid. Spreading speed measures how quickly liquid spreads across both inner and outer surfaces. Overall moisture management capacity (OMMC) is a composite index that integrates these measures into a single 0-1 value.
Commercial performance claims typically require minimum OMMC values in the range of 0.45 to 0.65 for basic moisture management, 0.65 to 0.80 for good performance, and above 0.80 for premium sportswear applications.
A fabric with OMMC below 0.4 has poor moisture management, essentially functioning as conventional fabric that gets wet and stays wet near the skin. A fabric with OMMC above 0.7 functions as effective sportswear moisture management. For Pakistani mills producing moisture management fabrics, the OMMC value and the component metrics should be part of the standard technical data sheet provided to buyers with fabric submissions.
UV protection: the UPF number and what it actually represents
Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) is the ratio of UV radiation that would reach the skin without the fabric to the UV radiation that actually reaches the skin through the fabric. UPF 30 means 1/30th of UV passes through, blocking 97%. UPF 50 means 1/50th passes through, blocking 98%. UPF 50+ is the maximum rating category under most standards.
The test methods are AATCC 183 (used in the US and widely in the Americas) and AS/NZS 4399 (Australia and New Zealand standard, widely referenced in outdoor and sports markets globally). Both measure fabric UV transmittance across UVA and UVB wavelengths using a spectrophotometer and calculate UPF from the measured data.
Important caveats that are often not disclosed in supplier-provided data: UV protection typically decreases when fabric is wet and when it's stretched. A fabric rated UPF 50 when tested dry and relaxed may rate UPF 25 when wet and under 20% stretch. For outdoor performance clothing intended to be worn during physical activity in wet conditions, these conditions should be included in testing.
The practical specification for buyers: UPF testing should specify both dry/relaxed conditions and wet/stretched conditions. The rating under the more challenging conditions is more relevant to actual consumer use.
Antimicrobial performance: AATCC 100 and wash durability
Antimicrobial treatment claims on activewear and workwear require quantitative testing under a recognized standard. AATCC 100 (Antibacterial Finishes on Textile Materials: Assessment of) measures the reduction in bacterial count between treated and untreated fabric specimens after a defined contact period.
For Staphylococcus aureus, the bacteria most relevant to body odor and skin infections in activewear applications, a typical commercial claim requires at least 99% bacterial reduction (2- log reduction) in the standard AATCC 100 test.
But here's what makes antimicrobial testing particularly important to get right: durability. Most consumers expect antimicrobial performance to persist through the active life of the garment. An antimicrobial treatment that performs excellently when new but degrades after 10 wash cycles isn't delivering the consumer benefit claimed.
Durability testing runs the AATCC 100 test after 20, 50, or 100 wash cycles depending on the performance claim being made. A label saying "odor-resistant" on a sportswear garment where the antimicrobial performance has degraded to below 90% reduction after 25 washes is misleading.
For Pakistani mills producing antimicrobial fabrics, technical data sheets should always include wash durability data alongside the initial performance result.
Wind resistance: air permeability and what the numbers mean
Wind resistance is measured by air permeability testing under ISO 9237. The test measures the volume of air that passes through a defined area of fabric under a defined pressure differential. Lower air permeability means higher wind resistance.
For shell fabrics marketed as windproof, typical specifications require air permeability below 1 L/m�/s, and often below 0.3 L/m�/s for the most performance-oriented applications. A fabric with air permeability of 100 L/m�/s is essentially permeable, with minimal wind resistance.
The air permeability specification should match the marketing claim. "Wind-resistant" typically implies meaningful but not complete wind blocking, suitable for moderate conditions. "Windproof" implies very low permeability, suitable for exposed conditions. These are different technical specifications.
Breathability: moisture vapour transmission and the RET value
Breathability in the technical sense means the ability of a fabric to allow water vapour (perspiration evaporated from the skin) to pass through. The measurement method under ISO 11092 produces a value called Ret (resistance to evaporative heat transfer), in m�Pa/W. Lower Ret means higher breathability.
For outdoor shell fabrics, breathability categories are: very good breathability (Ret < 6), good breathability (Ret 6-13), satisfactory breathability (Ret 13-20). Above 20, the fabric provides limited breathability benefit for active use.
The combination of low air permeability (windproof) and low Ret (breathable) is what defines high-performance outdoor shell fabrics. Achieving both simultaneously requires specific membrane technology, which is available from some Pakistani mills with appropriate technical investment.
Building a technical specification for Pakistani performance fabric sourcing
A complete technical specification for a performance fabric from Pakistan includes: the claimed performance property, the test method and version, the minimum acceptable initial performance value, the wash durability requirement (how many wash cycles and what minimum performance after), the test stage (pre-production lab submission, production lot verification, pre-shipment check), and the laboratory requirement (PNAC-accredited for the relevant method). Suppliers who can provide technical data sheets with all these values documented for each fabric in their offering are demonstrating genuine technical capability, not just marketing claims. Suppliers who respond with promotional language about their fabric's performance without specific test data are not yet at the technical documentation standard that serious performance fabric sourcing requires.
