Traceability From Cotton Field to Consumer: What's Actually Possible in Pakistan's Supply Chain Today
"Can you trace this back to the cotton field?" Here is the honest, tier-by-tier answer for Pakistani supply chains today.

The question "can you trace this garment back to the cotton field?" is being asked with increasing frequency and increasing seriousness. EU DPP requirements will mandate supply chain traceability data. CSDDD requires supply chain visibility for due diligence. CSRD Scope 3 accuracy depends on knowing where materials came from and how they were produced. UK Modern Slavery Act and its equivalents require demonstrating supply chain transparency.
For Pakistani supply chains, the honest answer to the traceability question is: partially, and with specific tools, more completely than you might expect. Let me be specific about what's possible at each tier, today.
Tier 1: the factory you visit
Traceability to the Tier 1 facility, the garment factory or finished goods manufacturer, is the most established and the most complete. Purchase orders, supplier codes, factory audit reports, test reports referencing specific facility details, and shipping documentation all create a well- documented chain from the buyer's purchase decision to a specific factory in a specific city. This tier is table stakes for any serious compliance programme. The documentation exists. The processes are established. The question for most buyers isn't whether they can trace to Tier 1 but whether that's sufficient.
It isn't, and in most Pakistan supply chains it's not even close to sufficient for DPP or CSRD requirements.
Tier 2: the wet processor
Most Pakistani garment factories don't do their own dyeing and finishing. They purchase fabric, often from fabric mills or traders who have had the grey fabric dyed and finished by separate dye houses. The dye house is a Tier 2 facility: it handles the material, it makes the decisions about which chemicals to use, it generates the effluent, and it produces the fabric that becomes the garment you buy.
Getting Tier 2 visibility requires one thing above all else: contractual requirement. A buyer who makes sub-contractor disclosure a condition of supply, who requires Tier 1 suppliers to provide in writing the names and locations of all facilities that handle production including wet processing, and who follows up to verify the disclosure, can achieve Tier 2 visibility.
This is not technologically complex. It's a contract term and an administrative process. The reason most buyers don't have Tier 2 visibility is not that it's impossible. It's that they haven't required it.
Once Tier 2 facilities are disclosed, they can be:
Added to the supplier audit programme Required to provide ZDHC ClearStream effluent test results Included in RSL testing by requiring that the specific wet processing facility's fabric be tested, not just the finished garment Incorporated into the supply chain transparency map for DPP data purposes
Tier 3: the yarn and fiber supply chain
Tracing from the fabric received at the garment factory back to the yarn spinner, and from the yarn spinner back to the fiber source, is where the supply chain becomes genuinely less visible without specific effort.
The yarn spinner is typically a Tier 3 supplier from the perspective of the final buyer, two steps removed from the garment factory. In Pakistan's textile sector, there are many yarn spinners, and many garment factories buy fabric from traders or fabric mills rather than directly from spinners. The chain can have multiple intermediary steps. Getting to yarn spinner level requires either: direct purchase relationships that include yarn source documentation, fabric mill disclosures that include their yarn source, or certification schemes like Better Cotton or GOTS that require the yarn spinner level to hold scope certification as part of the chain of custody.
For DPP purposes, fiber composition verification (is this actually the fiber content declared?) is achievable through laboratory testing at any stage of the supply chain. Third-party fiber composition testing, using near-infrared spectroscopy or wet chemical analysis, can verify that a fabric labeled "100% cotton" is indeed 100% cotton rather than a cotton-polyester blend. This is a Tti Labs capability.
Tier 4: the cotton farm
Getting from garment to specific cotton farm without a certification scheme is, honestly, beyond what the current Pakistani supply chain infrastructure routinely delivers. Cotton in Pakistan is traded through a market system that aggregates fiber from many farms, moving through ginning, trading, and spinning with pooling at various stages.
The technologies that can address this gap are developing:
Isotope ratio analysis: the stable isotope ratios (of carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen) in cotton fiber reflect the specific geographic conditions where the cotton grew. Isotope fingerprinting can indicate which region of Pakistan a fiber likely came from, distinguishing Sindh from Punjab cotton, and Pakistani cotton from Indian or Egyptian cotton with reasonable confidence. It cannot identify a specific farm, but it can verify regional origin claims.
DNA marking: some supply chain traceability services add unique synthetic DNA markers to cotton fiber at the gin stage and can detect those markers downstream in finished products. Applied Dna Sciences and similar companies offer commercial services built on this approach. Pakistan's ginning infrastructure would need to participate in such a scheme for it to work at the farm-to-garment level.
Certification chain of custody: GOTS and OCS are the established approach for farm-level traceability, requiring each supply chain stage to hold scope certification and issue Transaction Certificates. This is the most practically deployed approach in Pakistan's certified organic cotton sector.
What the EU DPP actually requires for Pakistani supply chains
The EU DPP for textiles is expected to require: fiber composition (verifiable by lab test, achievable today), chemical compliance records (achievable today with MRSL documentation), Tier 1 and material Tier 2 supplier disclosure (achievable with contract requirements), and environmental footprint data (achievable with measurement systems). It is not expected to require specific farm-level traceability in its initial implementation. This means that a Pakistani garment manufacturer who builds the following documentation system today is substantially DPP-ready: verified fiber composition by production lot, ZDHC Gateway-conformant chemical inventory with Level 1 conformance for wet processing chemicals, disclosed list of Tier 2 processing facilities, and verified GHG inventory with per-unit emission factor.
The technology for farm-level traceability is developing but isn't required by DPP in its expected first phase. The simpler but currently absent documentation, the Tier 2 supplier disclosure and the batch-level chemical records, is what most Pakistani suppliers need to build now.
